History 

The Labradoodle was first intentionally bred in Melbourne Australia, in the late 1980’s, where a man named Wally Conran carried out the first purpose bred mating of a standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever, in the search for a low allergy guide dog. From thirty-one Labradoodle puppies trained, twenty-nine passed as guide dogs.

Characteristics

Labradoodles are known for their outstanding intelligence, trainability, low allergy coat, low to non-shedding coat and lack of doggy odour. They are slightly heavier than a standard Poodle. They are an overall balanced dog, with a slightly longer than square build. They are a galloping dog, they should move effortlessly with energy, drive and purpose. Light and airy, flowing and free moving, with a complete absence of apparent effort. Expression should be lively, curious, full of fun and intuitive. Labradoodles should not be timid, shy or aggressive to people or other animals. They should not be snappy, yappy or highly strung.

Coat

As the Labradoodle develops through the generations, there are many different coat types. From short, sparce coats to long flowing hair coats and curly wool coats.

The wavy coat Labradoodle needs very little grooming. Curly coat Labradoodles require regular grooming, and should be clipped two to three times a year. Neither requires frequent bathing, as their coat repels moisture and dirt.

Colours come in black, silver, cream, apriot, chalk, gold and red. Browns may be known as chocolate or café. Any colour may have a small flash of white on the chest, which should not be penalised.
